The average time for a mile race (twice around the 1/2 mile track) was about 3 minutes, with faster horses racing under the 3 minute mark. The winner of the races between the trotting horses, usually no more than 3, was the best out of 5 heats. After the sanctioned races were over, the "Brushes" were held which were open races between the locals with any type of horse and any type of vehicle. These were often very colorful to watch. Rogers Feed Mill Description An account of the resource Erected in 1908 and still standing today, the Mill is located at the south side of the tracks opposite the railroad station. This feed and grain mill was an integral component of our agricultural community providing necessary and vital products to the region’s farmers, dairymen and general population. In 1929, Rogers sold the business to the Remz Brothers who continued to operate and expand the business to almost every state in the union. A partial list of their customers obtained from the company’s original ledgers included the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Washburn-Crosby (later General Mills), Land O’ Lakes Creamery, and Sam Walton of Walmart. Title A name given to the resource Echo the Beloved Racehorse Description An account of the resource Captain Nathaniel Dickerson's famous bay, Echo, whom the hamlet was named after, was a local trotter renowned for his speed, agility and race winning ways. After some diligent research, his stud book and pedigree were discovered, and what a pedigree it was. Echo was sired at the Joseph Rowland Farm in Miller Place, now the Miller Place Inn. His lineage can be traced back to Hambletonian 10 and the famous Imported Messenger. Messenger is considered the progenitor of the standard bred horse in America. Echo was "Horse Royalty!" Greene is the residence of Ernest Kreitzberg, located on the NW corner of Main Street (Patchogue Road/Route 112) and Terryville Road. Ernest Kreitzberg was a German immigrant involved in Real Estate. Title A name given to the resource First Terryville Post Office Description An account of the resource Established in 1888 by Thomas Terry and located in his home on Terryville Road, it is now the site of the Mevlana Mosque. The first postmaster was Preston Terry, son of Scudder H. Terry. The hamlet was first named Terrytown but was quickly changed to Terryville. We speculate it was in an effort to avoid confusion with Tarrytown in upstate New York.
