Title A name given to the resource Thomas Wilson Lace Mill Description An account of the resource An aerial view of the Thomas Wilson Lace Mill. The mill, started in 1839, was recognized as the country's oldest lace house in the 1950’s. It manufactured lingerie, evening dresses and surgical stockings. The mill was also responsible for the surgical leotards worn by the first astronauts to land on the moon. They were designed to minimize vascular problems upon reentry. The company also built 30 homes adjacent to the mill to house workers, called Westport. Note the sawtooth roof portion of the building which was the Loper Brothers factory that made several important and innovative automobiles in the first quarter of the 20th century. Title A name given to the resource Trotting horses training at the Gentlemen's Driving Park Description An account of the resource Wagers at the race track were usually around $50 with scheduled races at around $75, divided 3 ways. The average time for a mile race (twice around the 1/2 mile track) was about 3 minutes, with faster horses racing under the 3 minute mark. The winner of the races between the trotting horses, usually no more than 3, was the best out of 5 heats. After the sanctioned races were over, the "Brushes" were held which were open races between the locals with any type of horse and any type of vehicle. These were often very colorful to watch.
